Galapagos - gulls

There are two types of gulls on the Galapagos; the lava gulls which are dark brown/ black, and the swallow-tailed gull which looks more like the gulls you’d see elsewhere in the world. The swallow tail is unique in at least two characteristics however; it’s the only nocturnal gull in the world, and the only one with white young. These two facts may be related - it may be easier for the adults to locate their young at night with this colouration.  Lava Gulls are scavengers and will also eat lizards, hatchling iguanas and turtles, and may catch fish and small crustaceans. As scavengers, young become independent quickly after fledging. Lava gulls are rather rare; there are only about 400 pairs scattered around the Galapagos.
